P1 Gruffalo Adventures in the Deep Dark Wood

24th Apr 2026

Primary 1 have been really enjoying our work on The Gruffalo in class, with lots of fun activities linked to the story.

Today at Forest School, we took our learning outside and created our own Gruffalo trail. The children designed a path through the forest, using sticks, logs, flowers, stones and leaves to mark the way, just like the mouse’s journey in the story. They then worked together to build a Gruffalo cave using large branches, twigs, leaves and moss, creating a cosy, hidden space that looked just right for the Gruffalo to live in. The children used great teamwork and imagination and had so much fun bringing the story to life outdoors.

Last week, we also made Gruffalo Rice Krispie buns. The children melted chocolate, mixed it with cereal and decorated their buns to represent the Gruffalo’s features. They used purple sweets for his prickles, orange sweets for his eyes and green sweets for his poisonous wart. They really enjoyed linking the baking to the story and were very proud of their creations.

It has been lovely to see how engaged and creative the children have been while exploring this story.
