Little Learners, Big Helpers: P1 Fun with St Louis Students!
Our Primary 1 pupils recently had a wonderful opportunity to take part in a shared learning project with students from St Louis Grammar School as part of their Home Economics (Child Development) course. Mrs Morris and the students from St Louis initially made contact with our school to enquire about the interests of our P1 class, and to identify areas of the curriculum where meaningful learning resources could be developed. Mrs Colgan worked alongside them to highlight key areas where engaging, play-based activities would best support our youngest learners.
The St Louis students then set to work, designing and creating a fantastic range of interactive games and resources. With the support of their dedicated teachers, they used a variety of creative materials, including both craft items and outdoor resources, to produce activities that were both imaginative and purposeful.
The session was organised in a carousel format, with small groups of P1 pupils rotating through a series of activities. Each station had a clear literacy or numeracy focus, but the students used a wide range of creative and hands-on approaches to make the learning fun, engaging, and accessible for all.
Although the session was originally planned to take place outdoors in our quadrangle, the weather was unfortunately not on our side. However, this did not dampen spirits, and the activities were enjoyed just as much indoors! The St Louis students were absolutely amazing with our P1 children and were a real credit to their school. They were calm, patient, and highly engaging, taking the time to interact at the children’s level and ensuring that every pupil felt included and supported.
This is always a fantastic project that we greatly value each year, providing a meaningful and rewarding experience for both groups of pupils. Our P1 children absolutely loved it and gained so much from the experience. Thank you very much to Miss Newell, staff and students of St Louis for their visit. We are already looking forward to joining up again next year!
