Primary 6 Titanic topic - A Voyage of Discovery! 🚢
27th Feb 2026
Our Primary 6 class has been fully immersed in their World Around Us topic on the Titanic, and what an incredible journey of learning it has been!
We began by watching a detailed documentary about the Titanic disaster, taking careful notes to help us understand the key events and historical context. This helped us build a strong foundation before diving deeper into our learning.
We were delighted to welcome local historian Stephanie Laverty from TIME STEPS to our classroom. She taught us all about life in 1912, helping us to understand what daily life was like for people at the time. We explored the differences between first, second and third class passengers and learned about the social structure of the era.
One of the highlights of our topic was our visit to Titanic Belfast. During our guided tour, we saw fascinating artefacts, interactive exhibitions and learned more about Belfast’s proud shipbuilding history. The experience really brought our classroom learning to life.
Back at school, we took part in exciting STEM challenges. Working in teams, we designed and built boats using recyclable materials. We then tested them to see which boat could hold the most marbles before sinking or capsizing! This helped us explore buoyancy, balance and teamwork.
We also carried out a science investigation to find out whether the saltiness of water affects how quickly ice melts. We carefully observed, measured and recorded our results, developing our skills in fair testing and scientific enquiry.
Collaboration was a huge part of our topic.
As a class, we worked together to build a large LEGO Titanic model, carefully following instructions and supporting one another to complete this detailed project. It was fantastic to see our teamwork and perseverance in action!
In Literacy, we wrote our own imaginative stories for younger children about a mouse’s journey aboard the Titanic. We loved stepping into the shoes (or paws!) of a tiny passenger on the ship. We even designed eye-catching book covers for our stories using generative AI on Adobe Express.
Our ICT skills were put to great use throughout the topic. We were very fortunate to have Niall from the AMMA Centre visit our class to demonstrate how to use the GarageBand app to create and edit podcasts. His workshop helped us develop our recording, editing and production skills. We then created our own class podcast outlining the key facts about the Titanic disaster.
Throughout the topic we also:
Researched real passengers and produced detailed fact files about their lives.
Used a database on Just2Easy to answer questions about passengers.
Designed and constructed a timeline of events leading up to and following the sinking.
This topic has helped us develop our historical knowledge, scientific thinking, creativity, teamwork and digital skills. Most importantly, it has encouraged us to work collaboratively, think critically and present our learning in engaging ways.
We are very proud of all our hard work and hope you enjoy looking at the photos of our learning journey! 🚢✨
