P1 Dancing Raisins Water Experiment

16th Oct 2020

Our topic this half term was Nursery Rhymes. We were learning about Jack and Jill do we did a fun experiment as part of our water theme. You could have a go at home!

The Dancing Raisins Experiment

Supplies Needed:

  • Sparkling water
  • Still water
  • Raisins (fresh works best)

*Tip: You will want to separate the raisins first. If they are stuck together they won’t dance. Small/medium raisins worked better as well.

Method:

  1. Fill a glass with still water.
  2. Drop raisins into the glass. What happens? Do they sink or float?
  3. Fill a glass with sparkling water. What do you think will happen when we drop the raisins into sparkling water?
  4. Drop the raisins into the sparkling water.
  5. Then sit and watch what happens. You may need to be patient. It can take a minute or two for them to start moving.

The children had so much fun doing this experiment. They loved watching the raisins get lifted up and then pushed back down in the sparkling water. It was really cool to see the bubbles attach to the raisins and lift them up.
