A Beautiful Butterfly Surprise in P1

30th Apr 2026

In mid March, Primary 1 were very excited to receive live caterpillars as their new class pets as part of our learning about living things in Spring. From the very first day, the children carefully observed the tiny caterpillars and watched them grow bigger and bigger each day.

Over time, the caterpillars formed chrysalises or cocoons, and the children learned about the next stage of the butterfly life cycle. We talked about how the caterpillars were changing on the inside, even though it looked like nothing was happening on the outside.

Once all the chrysalises had formed, we carefully moved them into our butterfly house, making sure they were safe and had enough space. The children checked on them every day, wondering when the butterflies might appear.

Today we were incredibly lucky because while we were at school, the butterflies emerged from their cocoons. We were so excited that they did not wait until nighttime and that we were able to see the beautiful black and orange butterflies appear during the day.

The children learned about the four stages of a butterfly’s life cycle. First the egg, then the caterpillar, followed by the chrysalis/cocoon, and finally the butterfly.

This experience was a wonderful hands on opportunity for learning and helped the children develop curiosity, care for living things, and a real sense of excitement and wonder. Primary 1 have loved every moment of watching this amazing transformation!
