Primary 1 Explore Journeys with Translink
Our Primary 1 pupils have been learning all about journeys in World Around Us and what better way to bring this learning to life than by going on our very own journey around our beautiful local area!
We are extremely grateful to Translink Ulsterbus and Donald Sloan for facilitating this wonderful trip. Donald was not only our driver but an amazing tour guide, keeping us safe while sharing facts and fun along the way. Translink is such a valuable service for families in our community, helping us all on our daily journeys. Our adventure began with a tour around our local town of Kilkeel, where many boys and girls proudly spotted their homes or the homes of family members! We looked at familiar local businesses we pass on our way to school and talked about the beaches we can see on our journeys. We chatted about road safety, including what to do at traffic lights and how to cross safely. Next, we travelled out to Greencastle, where some of our children also come from. We saw the boats in the harbour, Greencastle Castle and even Carlingford Ferry. This led to wonderful discussions about the different journeys people take by boat and even journeys taken by swimming or walking. The children loved spotting people travelling in cars, on foot and on the water. We finished our adventure in Cranfield, where we viewed the beautiful Haulbowline Lighthouse and explored the idea of journeys people make to their holiday homes. And of course, it wouldn’t be a trip to Cranfield without a visit to the park! Every child was an absolute credit to St. Colman’s Primary School. They learned important real-life skills such as how to pay for a bus journey, how to greet the driver and the importance of saying thank you. For many of our children, this was their first ever journey on a bus, making the day even more special. A huge thank you to Translink and to Donald Sloan for giving us a trip we will never forget. What a wonderful way to learn about journeys!
