Road Safety in Primary 1 with Barney

3rd Oct 2023

This morning, the Primary 1 boys and girls had a very special visitor in our classroom. Barney, our School Crossing Patrol, came to speak the children about road safety. This visit was part of our new topic of ‘Journeys’ for this half term. Barney spoke to the children about how he helps to keep us all safe on our journeys to school.

The children came up with questions to ask Barney and they enjoyed interviewing him. They found out lots of new information:

  • Barney begins work at 8.30am so that he is on the road before any children arrive.
  • Barney’s coat is yellow so that he can be easily seen by drivers. He has reflective stripes on his coat so that he can be seen by drivers on dark mornings.
  • Barney walks to the middle of the road on his own. Children must wait on the pavement until Barney waves to cross the road.  All children must cross the road on front of Barney (rather than behind him) so that he can see everyone.
  • Barney has a lollipop stick that says ‘STOP’ on it. This is to warn vehicles to stop. Zach noticed our sound of the week ‘s’ on his sign!

Barney finished his visit by role playing how to safely cross the road with him.

Thank you for visiting our classroom Barney.
